Dancing the Quadrille and the Riddle of Bruce Lee

I recently made a video where I confessed to ‘air drumming’ as I walk down the road listening to my iPod. Music has that kind of effect on me. So it was that around noon today I was drawn to Spanish Square by the sound of a live band playing loudly. It seems I stumbled upon the prelude to a world record attempt by an enormous number of students dancing the Quadrille. Quite random really! Feeling a little out of place I carried on to the park because I’d been told the statue of Bruce Lee had been reinstated. If he had he has vanished again already. His plinth remains; possibly with a little more graffiti than the last time I looked. As he was chosen for such a public tribute because of his universal, cross-cultural appeal one has to hope there wasn’t a repeat of the vandalism that saw him removed the first time.

Jackie Chan or Bruce Lee?

Somewhere, buried in a file of photos from a trip to the States is a photo of Rowan and Jackie Chan. OK, I lie. However, I have a photo of Rowan standing by Jackie Chan’s star on the Walk of Fame on Hollywood Boulevard. She picked his star to be photographed next to because she’s a fan of his movies. Not the ones he’s famous for but the cheesy American ones like The Tuxedo or The Medallion, in which he smiles a lot and speaks English in a particularly appealing fashion. The appeal is not the action, so I was somewhat surprised when Rowan started talking about Bruce Lee the other day. Bruce Lee it seems is, or was, something of a unifying force in post-conflict Mostar, not that to our knowledge he ever visited the region. Nevertheless, what he represented resonated so much with the different sides, she read on the internet , that a life-size statue of the man himself was erected in the park here.
